Welcome to Year 5
As always the Year 5 team will be working tirelessly to ensure that each and every child has the best possible educational experience at Westminster Primary Academy. The Year 5 team will be doing everything we can to enable every child to get the most out of their time with us and reach their full potential.
Outdoor learning / Archaeological dig
Mexican day where we learned about the music, dress and food from Mexico.
English and Maths
This year, the children will be basing much of their English work around a variety of class novels. These will be linked to the various topics that we study throughout the year, such as; Space, The Vikings and the Anglo Saxons. Through studying a class read, it allows children to gain a love of reading whilst also hitting curriculum objectives in Reading, Writing and SPaG. As part of their homework children should access reading books on Bug Club and practise their spellings each week.
In year 5, children will be building on prior mathematical knowledge as well as learning new concepts and ideas. Children are expected to have a solid understanding and recall their times tables and therefore must be learning these not only in school but at home. Children will also be expected to log on to TTRockstars at home for 30 minutes a week.
Year 5 will be swimming this year. 5P will be going for the first half of the year (Sept - Feb) and then 5W will go for the second half (Feb - July). These sessions will be on a Wednesday morning.
Girls will need a one piece swimming costume (not bikini)
Boys will need swimming trunks or lycra swimming shorts.
Girls and any boys with long hair must wear a swimming hat
Other PE sessions across the year will include games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities aimed at building teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.
