Welcome to Year 5
As always the Year 5 team will be working tirelessly to ensure that each and every child has the best possible educational experience at Westminster Primary Academy. For obvious reasons, this year will throw up more difficulties than usual, however we will be doing everything we can to enable every child gets the most out of their time with us. Intervention strategies will be put in place and delivered by Mrs Henderson to ensure any gaps in learning are covered by delivering a fun and engaging curriculum.
Outdoor learning / Archaeological dig
Mexican day where we learned about the music, dress and food from Mexico.
English and Maths
This year, the children will be basing much of their English work around a variety of class novels. These will be linked to the various topics that we study throughout the year, such as; Space, The Vikings and the Anglo Saxons. Through studying a class read it allows children to gain a love of reading whilst also hitting curriculum objectives in reading writing and SPaG. The class reads will be posted throughout the year on our year group topic web.
In year 5, children will be building on prior mathematical knowledge as well learning new concepts and ideas. Children are expected to have a solid understanding and recall of their times tables and therefore must be learning these not only in school but at home. Children will also be expected to complete maths homework which will help towards their understanding of any concepts covered throughout the weeks.
Year 5 will be swimming later on this year (either after Christmas or after February half term). More information will be sent out nearer the time.
Girls will need a one piece swimming costume (not bikini)
Boys will need swimming trunks - these must be swimming costume material (not knee length)
Girls and any boy with long hair must wear a swimming hat
Other PE sessions across the year will include games, gymnastics, dance, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities including Commando Jo missions, aimed at building teamwork, communication and problem solving skills.
