Nurture / SEND Ms Sharp + Mrs Norbury
We are a hard working year group and always encourage every child to be the best they can be! In addition to the learning in the classroom we have daily intervention groups, headed by Ms Sharp and Mrs Norbury, to ensure that any gaps in the children’s learning are plugged effectively.
We use Class Dojo to send home messages and keep you up-to-date with life at Westminster Primary Academy. Please check your email for your Class Dojo invitation, if you haven’t accepted this already.
Homework is set weekly. In Year 4, this consists of spellings, reading and times tables. Spellings are tested on Monday as a baseline and the weekly test is on a Friday. Spellings will be sent via Class Dojo so that the children can practise at home. The children are expected to read their online books, on Bug Club, for at least 10 minutes every evening. They will need to complete the quizzes which are linked to each book as they read. For times tables, we use Times Tables Rockstars and will let you know, via Class Dojo, which times tables your child needs to practise. Please let one of the Year 4 staff know if you experience any problems in accessing any of your child’s homework.
All children have a login and password for a wide range of online learning to access at home including; Times Tables Rock Stars and RM Easimaths for Maths, together with Lexia and Bug Club for reading. Please let us know if you need reminders of your child’s log in for any of the above.
PE for Y4 is Tuesday and Thursday. We will be covering a range of sports including gymnastics, dance, cricket, tennis and team games. In addition to this, during the Autumn Term, we will have coaches from Fit2go and Healthy Heads to support our PE lessons and teach the children about healthy lifestyles.
Some of our main topics for the year will include - Ancient Greeks, Rainforests and The Romans.
In English we follow the scheme ‘The Write Stuff’ by Jane Considine. Based around an engaging text, the children learn to spot the features within each genre of writing. They are then given opportunities to put these into practise in their own writing.Excitingly, we have been selected to take part in regular drama workshops throughout the year delivered by The Grand Theatre. These workshops will not only engage the children’s creativity , but will also support their Speaking, Listening and resilience skills.
Maths will consist of building on the skills they have learned in previous years with a focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. Year 4 children are required to complete a national multiplication assessment during the summer term. To help the children learn their times tables, we will be setting homework based on this area on a regular basis. You can also support your child with this by encouraging them to log on to Times Tables Rockstars to practise at home.
We have a wide variety of experiences for the children in Year 4, something which should grab every child’s interests. In Science, some of the areas we will be studying are the Digestive System and Teeth, Electricity and Sound. History topics include The Ancient Greeks, The Romans and Monarchy. In Geography we will cover rivers and rainforests, as well as looking at life in South America. We will be building our language skills with weekly French lessons. Art lessons focus on developing, exploring and evaluating creative skills, as well as looking at the works of famous artists for inspiration. DT topics include torch making and biscuit creation - which proves very popular! PSHE will cover areas such as, Being Me, Dreams and Celebrations for the future. In RE, we will be looking at world religions, focussing on Buddhism and Christianity. Computing will include learning about digital literacy, programming and creating animations.
