Curriculum

We have a wide variety of experiences for the children in Year 4, something which should grab every child’s interests. In Science, some of the areas we will be studying are the Digestive System and Teeth, Electricity and Sound. History topics include The Ancient Greeks, The Romans and Monarchy.  In Geography, we will cover rivers and rainforests, as well as looking at life in South America. We will be building our language skills with weekly French lessons. Art lessons focus on developing, exploring and evaluating creative skills, as well as looking at the works of famous artists for inspiration. DT topics include torch making and biscuit creation - which proves very popular! PSHE will work on Happy mind which teaches children the different ways in which they can promote positive well being and develop relationships as well as managing emotions and problem solving. In RE, we will be looking at world religions, focusing on Buddhism and Christianity. Computing will include learning about digital literacy, programming and creating animations. Where possible, we will take learning outdoors and learn actively; this helps to develop reflective and inquisitive thinking, problem-solving approaches, resilience, confidence, communication skills and physical and mental health.

Homework

Homework is set weekly. In Year 4, this consists of spellings, reading and times tables. Children are expected to read on Bug Club, for at least 10 minutes every evening. For times tables, we use Times Tables Rockstars to practise multiplication and division facts.

All children have a login and password for a wide range of online learning to access at home including; Times Tables Rock Stars and RM Easimaths for Maths, together with Lexia and Bug Club for reading. Please let us know if you need reminders of your child’s log in for any of the above.

PE

We will be covering a range of sports including gymnastics, dance, cricket, tennis and team games. In addition to this, during the year, we will have coaches from Fit2go and Healthy Heads to support our PE lessons and teach the children about healthy lifestyles.

Please ensure that your child can remove their earrings or does not wear them on PE days. Your child may wish to come to school in their kit on PE days - please see the uniform list for further information.

Maths will consist of building on the skills they have learned in previous years with a focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. Year 4 children are required to complete a national multiplication assessment during the summer term. To help the children learn their times tables, we will be setting homework based on this area on a regular basis. You can also support your child with this by encouraging them to log on to Times Tables Rockstars to practise at home.
